General Information:

S. marcesens, S. liqefaciens, S. odorifera are most clinically significant

Pathogenesis and Infectious Disease:

  • disease occurs primarily in debilitated individuals
  • S. marcescens is the most common isolte
  • an opportunist associated with pneumonia, bacteremia, septicemia, endocarditis, localized cellulitis, burn infections, and urinary tract infections developing from indwelling catheters

Test Results:

  • Lactose fermentation: positive (pink colonies) – late fermenters
  • HE/XLD : positive (yellow or colorless colonies)
  • IMViC :
  • S. marcescens : -/-/+/+ red pigment
  • S. odorifera : v/+/v/+ dirt, musty like potatoes
  • S. liquefaciens : -/+/+/+
  • TSI : A/A
  • H2S : negative
  • Motitlity : positive
  • ONPG : positive
  • Lysine and Ornithine : positive
