- Aeromonas is gram negative rods, facultative anaerobic seen in soil and fresh and brackish water and it causes infections in both Human and Animals mostly fishes
- The most important pathogens are A. hydrophila and A. caviae
- Two major diseases caused by Aeromonas are gastroenteritis and wound infections, with or without bacteremia
Gastroenteritis occurs after the ingestion of contaminated water or food, whereas wound infections result from exposure to contaminated water.
Laboratory Diagnosis:
- Gram negative rods
- Beta hemolysis on blood agar
- On EMB or Macconkey it’s non lactose fermenter so usually has translucent colonies
- It’s Oxidase positive similar to V.Cholerae
- On TCBS Agar shows yellow colonies similar to V.Cholerae but Aeromonas usually hydrolyze Esculin and ferment Arabinose sugar while Vibrio cholerae don’t
