1) Pre-hepatic (hemolytic): The pathology is occurring prior to the liver.
- Sickle cell anemia
- Spherocytosis
- Thalassemia
- G6PD deficiency
- Hemolytic uremic syndrome
- Gilbert’s syndrome
- Crigler-Najjar syndrome.
2) Hepatic (hepatocellular): The pathology is located within the liver.
- Acute or chronic hepatitis
- Hepatotoxicity
- Cirrhosis
- Drug induced hepatitis
- Alcoholic liver disease
- Primary biliary cirrhosis
- Neonatal jaundice
- Rat fever (leptospirosis)
3) Post-Hepatic (cholestatic): The pathology is located after the conjugation of bilirubin in the liver.
- Gallstones
- Pancreatic cancer
- “Liver flukes”
- Strictures of the common bile duct
- Biliary atresia
- Cholangiocarcinoma
- Pancreatitis
- Pancreatic pseudocysts
